Improving field establishment of safflower in soils infected by Phytophthora drechsleri and Pythium ultimum

چکیده مقاله:
One of the major field constraints to seed production in safflower has proven tobe soil born pathogens, Phytophthora drechsleri and Pythium ultimum. In order toevaluate the efficiency of a field-laboratory selection method to improve resistanceof safflower against soil born pathogens, Ph. drechsleri and P. ultimum, a two-yearinvestigation was conducted. The results showed that selection is an efficientmethod for increasing resistance to seed and seedling death caused byPhytophthora and Pythium in safflower. Selection could have improvedgermination percent, days to 50% germination, percent of undamaged seedlingsand index of disease percent when genotypes were faced with both pathogens.Regarding kind of damages, Pythium caused more seed rot and Phytophthorainduced more seedling death. It could be concluded that selection for resistance toPythium, could also increase resistance to Phytophthora. Safflower was, however, more susceptible to Phytophthora than Pythium. Also, genes for resistance to seedrot are different than those controlling resistance to seedling death, so preemergencedamping off should be considered a completely independent trait frompost-emergence damping off in safflower. It was concluded that used fieldlaboratoryselection method could well improve resistance of safflower topathogens Phytophthora and Pythium and hence seed yield.

improvement of resistance to pythium ultimum in safflower by selection under field conditions
damage of the pathogens is one of the main limitations for cultivating and production of safflower. this study was performed to investigate reaction of safflower genotypes to pythium ultimum during 2009 and 2010 under field conditions. the study was done in two parts, selection and evaluation of parents (part 1; 2009) and evaluation of the progenies (part2; 2010). in the first year, the experim...

Since their introduction in the late 1970s, phenylamide fungicides have been used effectively to control diseases caused by the Peronosporales. These fungicides have a very specific mode of action; inhibiting fungal ribosomal RNA polymerases (7). Because of this specificity, there is a relatively high risk that resistance to the fungicide may appear quickly in the target fungal population (3). ...

seed rot caused by pythium ultimum is an important disease of safflower in iran and other countries. therefore, finding the genetic sources of resistance and releasing of resistant cultivar is considered as important objective by safflower breeders. this disease will spread when air humidity and the moisture in the soil are sufficiently prepared and this situation occurs exactly in the time of ...
